Is this you?

Signs your old insulation needs to come out

Droppings or nesting

Mice, squirrels or raccoons have been living in it. Insulation holds the smell and the contamination.

Water damage or mold

A roof leak or condensation soaked it. Wet insulation stops working and can grow mold.

Flat, gray or patchy

It has settled, been crushed by storage, or been pushed around by cable and HVAC work.

A musty smell upstairs

Odors from contaminated insulation can drift down into the rooms below.

The process

How insulation removal works

  1. 01

    Protect the house

We cover the path from your door to the attic and seal off the hatch area before anything moves.

  2. 02

    Vacuum it out

A commercial insulation vacuum pulls the old material through a hose and out a window to the truck. It never comes through your living space.

  3. 03

    Haul it away

The old insulation leaves with us and is disposed of off site.

  4. 04

    Clean and sanitize

Droppings, debris and nesting are cleaned out and the attic is sanitized.

  5. 05

    Seal and reinsulate

With the attic empty, we air seal every gap we can reach and blow in new insulation to an even, measured depth.

The difference

Why removal beats covering it up

  • New insulation over a dirty attic traps the smell and contamination
  • An empty attic is the only time every air leak can be sealed
  • You start over with a clean, measured R-value
  • Before and after photos of the whole attic

Questions

Insulation Removal: common questions

How do I know if my insulation needs to come out?

If it's wet, moldy, full of droppings, or badly compressed, it should come out. If it's clean and dry and just thin, adding on top is usually fine. The free inspection tells you which, with photos.

Is insulation removal messy?

Not inside your house. We cover the path to the attic and vacuum the old insulation through a hose straight outside. Nothing gets carried through your living space.

How long does it take?

Removal on a typical attic takes about a day. With air sealing and new insulation, most jobs take one to two days. You get the schedule in writing with your price.

Do I need to leave the house?

No. Most homeowners stay home. The work stays sealed off in the attic and the path to it.

What if my attic has vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a loose, pebbly, gray-brown insulation found in some older homes, and it can contain asbestos. If we find it, we stop and tell you. It needs to be tested before anyone disturbs it.

How much does insulation removal cost?

It depends on the size of the attic, how much is up there and how contaminated it is. After the free inspection you get a written price for removal on its own and with air sealing and new insulation, so you can compare.
